SHould I get a Pentax pair of binoculars or a Nikon pair?
I was looking for binoculars, and I found two pairs in my budget range (around $125), the Nikon Binoculars Action Extreme 8×40 for $121, and the Pentax Binoculars PCF WP II 8X40 for $149, so which one is better?

The Nikon has a wider field of view than the Pentax, but the Pentax has a longer eye relief. If you wear glasses, the Pentax will do better for you. Otherwise the Nikon would seem to be the winner because of the price.

My concern is that neither of these have Fully Multi Coated lenses. The Nikon is only Multi Coated, the Pentax has no info on coating type. Fully Multi Coated (FMC) lenses will give you the brightest images.

Nikon Binoculars for Astronomy and Nature Watch?
I have been looking at Nikon binoculars but there are too many info to make a decision.

Should I get a 10×50 or 12×50 or 16×50 ? I´d say 16x is better because gives a better magnification but I am worried if it will be too shaky.

Do 16x become too shake for star gazing and nature watch?

For bird watching, i use 8×21 binoculars. For astronomy, i use 8×21 binoculars, despite the availability of 8×42 and 10×50.

For me, 8×21 binoculars have these features: They fit in my pocket. Especially in winter, when i’ve got one of those huge winter coats, 8×21 binoculars can be parked in a coat pocket, so i always have them. They’re light weight, so i can hold them longer. I find that 8x is not so powerful that i can’t hold them steady. I find 10x to be very difficult to hand hold, and need a tripod (which i have). YMMV. For day time use, 8x and 21 mm is plenty of power and light. And, i have a 22×60 spotting scope on a very sturdy tripod if i need more. At night, i use my 8×21 binoculars to find objects that just aren’t visible naked eye. I have enough field of view to navigate, and i get two magnitudes of dimmer objects than naked eye, allowing me to see many more field stars. And, when i want more light and power, i have a 240×254 monocular (10″ telescope).

If you’re going to have a tripod, and i mean a really good sturdy tripod, then go with larger binoculars.

But i went with really cheap binoculars this last time around. $25 at a sporting goods store. They’re more fragile than expensive binoculars. But if you treat them like glass artwork, they’ll last decades. Cheap binoculars may not have very good close focus. That matters if you want to do butterfly watching. I’ve never seen it as a problem for bird watching. And for astronomy, close focus is, by definition, irrelevant.

While i have binoculars and a spotting scope on a tripod, i find them quite awkward for astronomy. In astronomy the best views are straight up, so you’re looking through the least amount of atmosphere. But straight through binoculars require that you get your head directly beneath the eyepiece for that. So binoculars with a 45 degree or 90 degree bend are better. If you can lie down on your back and hold them steady, straight through binoculars are fine. And i use them that way when otherwise doing a meteor watch.

Are these Real Tree Nikon Monarch Binoculars different from these Nikon Monarchs Binoculars?
I’m thinking about getting Nikon 7525 Camo Monarch Binoculars. And I’ve been comparing them with Nikon 7295 Monarch Binoculars.

Are these any different from the Nikon Monarchs that come in Black? What do the real tree nikon monarch binoculars feel like? I have a Black Nikon monarch here that i’ve borrowed and I like the texture of the binocular. This rubbery feeling is nice. Let me know if there is a difference.

The difference is the license fee Nikon has to pay to the Real Tree Camo developers to use the pattern and name. Other than that, it is the same product as the black version.

Nikon Action 8×40

Nikon’s Action series has always been their entry level effort. The series has gone through some pretty radical changes over the years. Nikon seems to be much more adventuresome at this price point than they are in their top of the line products. The latest Action binoculars all feature aspheric lens technology.

The Action 8×40 is probably the glass of most interest to birders. It is a wide angle design, with 8.5° of field (that translates to 446 feet at 1000 yards), a close focus in the 12 foot range and eye relief of about 10mm. The limited eye relief means that spectacle wearers will not see the full field (what else is new?)…but the usable field for most people will still be relatively wide when compared to most 8x40s on the market (especially in this price range). The body is mat gray armored. The smooth armor is sufficiently tacky to provide a good grip, but some gripping aids (ridges or patterns) might have made it more secure in the hands. Body design is standard porroprism, and comfortable in the hands, with a large comfortable ribbed focus control. However the focus might be a stretch for those with real small hands.

Optically, the Nikon Action 8×40 gives the extra bright, extra sharp first impression that I have come to associate with Nikon’s applications of aspheric technology. While the view is not the equal of that provided by glasses like the Swift Ultralite 8×42 glasses which cost over twice as much as the Nikon Action 8×40, it is certainly very close.

When compared to the current BVD Reference Standard for bargain binoculars, the Bushnell 8×42 NatureView, the Nikon Action 8×40 is slightly brighter, with a bit more snap (likely due to the lack of multi-coating on the NatureView). The NatureView, however, has much better eye relief and a bit more comfortable view. While the NatureView retains its Reference Standard designation for the moment, the Nikon Action 8×40 are certainly very fine binoculars in the same price range…a BVD Starred Product, highly recommended to anyone who wants bird-worthy binoculars on a budget. Really, if you start birding with the Egrets, it may be a long time before you feel the need to upgrade, and it will certainly spoil you for many a lesser glass that just happens to cost more.

The Nikon Action series binoculars utilize aspherical lenses, ergonomic chassis, and quick central focus to maximize long term viewing comfort. All models feature high light transmission, multicoated lenses and high index BaK-4 prisms for superior resolution and brightness.
