Can I make my binocualrs have night vision?
I have a pair of 8 x 21 Tacso binocluars. Is there any way that I can make it have some sort of night vision? When I say that I dont mean James Bond spy stuff. I mean ANYTHING that I can to do to make it see ANY better when it is dark.
-Preferably CHEAP!!

Here are the binocular’s specs:
Model : 165BCR
Magnification: 8x
Field of View: 383ft/126m
Exit-Pupil: 2.6mm
Prism Type: Roof
Weight: 6.5 oz
Objective lens Diameter: 21mm
Lens Coating: Fully Coated
Focus Type: Center
Features: Rubber fold-down eyecups, camo rubber armor, carrying pouch and neck strap
Name: Tasco Essentials 8×21 165BCR Folding Roof Prism FRP Compact Camo Binoculars
———————————-
Thanks for the help.

Tasco bino’s are cheap. Even replacing these with a high quality pair at the same size would increase the amount of light transmitted to your eye, and therefore your ability to see at dusk. As a hunter, the rule is “you can’t shoot what you can’t see.” Optics are KEY. High quality binoculars are expensive. The lenses are perfect and the coatings are important for reducing scatter of light between the lens elements. A good pair of binoculars will cost up to $1500 without any night vision gadgetry.

Night vision is a completely different technology. You won’t be reinventing it cheaply. In addition to a series of light concentrating lenses, there is an electronic system that picks up low level light and displays it as a phosphorescent image. A good source of information if you want to learn about how things like that are made is:

idk it could be binocular, goggles, or monocular

binos 2.0

eye clops night Vision 1.vs 2.?
I much dislike the 2. whats the point in seeing in the dark if you have on free hand.I mean Yea the first one uses a lot of battery ( not sure if they are the same) and its heavy but its more cooler like hang on the shelf cool. BUt 2. is like binoculars. Any way tell me the pros and cons of each and if they still sell 1,

try to google them and read about them…….then compare

How do i use these?
have a pair of nighthawk Tactical Night Vision Binoculars 2.5×42 but have no idea how to use or anything i dont even know how to put the battery in correctly can you or someone you know help me plz

If you bought them new, they came with a set of instructions. If you bought them used, they SHOULD HAVE come with a set of instructions — and if they didn’t, you should return them for a refund.

If you can’t get a refund, take them to a sporting-goods store and ask there.

If you have the instructions, I have a question for you: You do know how to read, don’t you?

Up in dabizness vey: Do you take turns telling what you’re thankful for on Tday with your family? What are?
you thankful for this year?

Can anyone help me?
I got a pair of jaguar night vision binoculars over 3 years ago as a gift and the thing is that I never really used and a week ago when I took it out of the box, it wasn’t working. I read the manual and it said that if it wasn’t going to be used for 10 days or more that the battery should be removed. Anyways, it also came with a warranty that’s only good for 2 years. This thing costs over $300 dollars and I feel bad ’cause I had no idea. I tried to conctac the manufacturer, but they never got back to me. I thought of buying a pair of those and then return the non-operating one to the store, but I felt guilty doing that. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Hmmm…if you can find the exact same pair I would do the returning to the store thing. Just being honest

Which one do you perfer 7×50 model or the 10×50 model binoculars? Or should I get one of each model?

Stick with the 10×50 or larger and a Tripod is a definate MUST if you use them for astronomy. Otherwise you wil be too shakey to enjoy your views. Even your pulse will make them shake.

I prefer Orion products personally.

http://www.oriontelescopes.com

They do have some excellent binoculars and tripods for astronomy.

I would also like to suggest that you join a local Astronomical Society or astronomy club in your area. You will meet a lot of really nice people who can help you to get the most out of your purchase and teach you where all the treasures in the sky are located and you can join them at star parties. Most clubs have loaner scopes and lend books and videos too plus they have great presentations at their monthly meetings. You won’t be sorry you joined a club.

Binoculars? (Again!)?
I thought this set was the absolute PERFECT set of binoculars! Please give me feed-back on what you think!

http://www.opticsplanet.net/celestron-outland-lx-10×50-binoculars.html

Hello Jenny -

I think you have made a good choice and I am certain that you will find hours of enjoyment with these binoculars. They are not top of the line, but they are much better than most binoculars you will find in most stores and way better than the ubiquitous department store el cheapo telescopes. You will see beautifully tinted double stars, star clusters, nebulae, great views of the moon, and stunning views of the Milky Way. You will easily see the Andromeda Galaxy, and should be able to get reasonable but small planetary views as well. From a dark site, you will be able to see all kinds of stuff. You might want to get a simple tripod to lighten the load a little. Enjoy!

Binoculars Help!?
I wanted a pair of binoculars for look at the moon, and casual stargazing. But I didn’t want to have to use a tri-pod. Also I wanted to keep the cost reasonable, so I though this pair was pretty good, please give me your feed back on what you think. And if you think there is another better pair with about the same price please give me the link!

http://www.opticsplanet.net/celestron-outland-lx-10×50-binoculars.html

Also what will I be able to see with this pair. And could I also use it during the daytime?

10×50 is a very popular size for astronomy, and these sound like a good value.

As for what you can see, you’ll be able to see the lunar maria and major craters, and the moons of Jupiter. Saturn may look oval if you look carefully, but seeing the rings takes higher power. You should be able to see 60 or more of the Messier objects, plus a number of other clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. You won’t see much detail at only 10 power, but in a number of places you’ll be able to see multiple objects in a single field of view. Also, some large objects show up best in binoculars. In a dark sky, the Milky Way is beautiful and fascinating. Many of the larger dark nebulae in the Milky Way are most easily seen in binoculars.

These will also work well in the daytime. They’re a bit bigger than what some birders prefer, but if your primary use is astronomy, I’d stick with these rather than something like 8×40′s.

Binoculars!?
Which set is better, please explain in detail why you think so! This will help greratly!

http://www.opticsplanet.net/celestron-outland-lx-10×50-binoculars.html

or the

http://www.excelsis.com/1.0/entry.php?sectionid=21&entryid=133

Or you may choose to add your own binoculars you think are the best, by try to keep the price with in 50-150$!

Between the two, I would go with the Orion. They are both virtually the same specs, but the Orion has about 15% wider field of view with the same magnification, meaning you can see more of your target with the same magnification.
I wouldn’t reccomend binoculars for stargazing, however, if that was your plan. Just go with a telescope.

Can someone recommend to me a good pair of 10×50 (or somewhere near that) binoculars for astronomy?
Ive been looking at these Nikon Action 10×50′s. They look pretty good and have good reviews. I have also been looking at these celestron outland LX 10×50′s. Im concerned about the celestrons because they keep on advertising the fact that it has an extremely near focus. I want mine for astronomical purposes, not closeup. If anyone can tell me which one is better, or recommend a different pair, please do so. Keep it under 100 dollars.

Close focus does not affect far focus. I have some 8×42′s that let me focus on my knees. It’s great for looking at butterflies. When Saturn’s rings were tilted all the way over, i was able to see them in the 8×42′s as separate from the body of the planet. Most people say you need at least 15x for that. Close focus can drive the cost up, however.

I find it difficult to hand hold binoculars at 10x and higher. But then, i can only do about 25 pushups. Perhaps you have lighter binoculars or stronger, steadier arms.

In my experience any binoculars are fine. But cheap binoculars are typically fragile. But if you treat them like fragile glass artwork, they’ll last a long time. Don’t toss them into the floor of the canoe. Don’t leave them in your car where heat/cold cycles will get at them. Expensive binoculars will take more abuse, but remember that you have more to lose. Go to a sporting goods store and get a pair for $25. Keep your receipt. At your earliest opportunity, check them out by looking at stars. If you see double stars, return them.

Good tripods are expensive. My Bogen tripod was $250, and worth it.

Binocualrs (Trust Me Last Time!)?
I have never really bought anything online before, so when you say add to cart, does that mean your buying it, or puting it on hold?

http://www.opticsplanet.net/celestron-outland-lx-10×50-binoculars.html

It’s like Linda June says, like putting things in your shopping cart at the supermarket. Reputable ecommerce sites all give you plenty of opportunities to change your mind before you finally commit yourself to the order. I’ve bought lots of things online, and it really works very well. The hardest part is waiting for the package to be delivered. When will they invent edelivery?!

Enjoy your binocs!

which is real maker of barska binoculars?china or usa?

it appears that they are at least assembled in San diego, Ca but some of the components probably are made in various overseas countries including china.

http://www.barska.com/about.html

Barska 15X70 Binoculars on EBay?
Check this link to see the profile. Anyone with knowledge of binoculars (I am intending to use these for star gazing) are these worth the money? Am I better off with a store bought pair at regular price? I am aware of the risks of buying on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=190273297045

Obviously I need to study more before I buy a pair. What is an ideal measurement to look for if I intend to use binoculars for seeing planets, moons, stars and nebulae?

A binocular that size defeats the purpose of having a binocular. First of all, I’ve looked through many Barska optics and have yet to find one that is built well. A good binocular with low (8 or 10x) power will serve you better than a bad one with high power. Resolution is what you’re after, not only magnification.

The high magnification will mean you need to mount this monster on a tripod to use it. Anything above a 10x will not work well when it’s handheld.

EDIT
Binoculars are good for scanning the sky, looking at the moon, but to look at nebulaes or other planets in detail then you need a telescope. Binoculars just doesn’t have enough power or brightness to handle that. I have a 60x spotting scope, even that won’t give a good image of venus.

How far can these binoculars see in km ?
http://cgi.ebay.com/12-36×70-HIGH-POWER-BARSKA-Zoom-Binoculars-Astronomy_W0QQitemZ230303565621QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230303565621&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

How far can these binoculars magnify that’s the better question? for what purpose would you buy these binoculars? space? military? really far seeing?

12 to 36 power. So it will magnify up to 36 power. Hunting, seeing things at a distance, and birdwatching would be some uses. As for distance, they will enable you to see billions of miles or kilometers. Look at a star cluster for instance.

what do you think of binoculars with no need for any focusing?
i want to buy some binoculars, but it reads “Fast immediate viewing, sample with no need for any focusing”

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Barska-10×50-Focus-Free-Binoculars-Blue-Lens/12396442

would you suggest to buy those?

Must be junk! Any decent pair of binoculars has center focusing.
Set-up:
1. Use the center focus to focus on a object. When in focus go to “2″
2. adjust the eyepiece that rotates to focus that eye. When in focus, then
3. all you have to do when you move to another subject is use the “center-focus” and that’s all!

I went to Walmart’s site and they are awful inexpensive for the claims they are making. But on the other hand bino’s without center focus makes them very expensive. Plus I never heard of this brand.

how is 20-140×80 barska binocular?
how is 20-140×80 barska binocular?

zoom is bad news.

the magnification numbers don’t look right. did you type them correctly?

80mm binoculars are going to be too heavy to hand hold.

Anybody know if Barska or Bushnell are considered good?
for binoculars or telescopes, what are some better brands that have reasonable prices. Thanks.

Both are at the bottom end of the market, and I would never recommend them. Stick to the well known brands: Canon, Celestron, Nikon, Orion, Pentax, etc.

How can you see more clearer in night vision binoculars at night?
I bought a night vision binocular (20X50). It is one of those ordinary binoculars that doesn’t require batteries. I tested it out last night, and it quite didn’t rise to my expectations. So how can I improve my night vision and the binoculars?

It sounds like to need to know what to expect from them more than anything else. The major difference between a set of night binoculars and regular binoculars is lens size. For your set, this is the 50 in 20X50. This is the lens diameter in millimeters. The larger the lens diameter the more light they collect. For night use, 50 is on the small end of the range. 60 or 70 mm lens would do a better job.
The 20 in 20X50 is the magnification power of the binoculars. 20 is much too high a power to be held by hand. It would be very difficult to hold them steady enough to see well. The image will bounce and jiggle around from small movements of your hand, arms, and body. Even your heartbeat and breathing would cause some problems. You will need to rest them on something or get a tripod. 10 power is about the highest you can go for handheld binoculars.

Do tower air traffic controllers have night vision binoculars?
I’m researching an accident that occured in 1978. I was wondering if tower controllers used FLIR or night vision binoculars at that time, and if they could use them to verify a gear down emergency. Hoping I might even find a link to a site that explains this equipment.

No. In no tower that I have ever been in nor worked in has there been any kind of binoculars other than your standard set. That’s something I’ve never even heard of being used, ever. They really wouldn’t be of much use up there. At night, it’s simply up to the pilots to ensure their gear is down.

How good are Swarovski binoculars?
What are these like compared to say your average 100-300 dollar binocular? does it make the colors more vivid or let me see crisp and clearer than my normal eyesight? I see around 20/20 maybe a little better but I have prescription glasses that let me see 20/12 (lowest the eye charts went) so I can have somewhat of an idea on how good the lenses are. I really obsess a lot over optics and big glass and always try to go all out so the price doesn’t bother me that much i just want to know if there’s much difference?

Hi Samuel -

It’s a fair question. We have both the EL with Swarovision and the SLC HD and they’ll knock the socks off just about anything they go against. I’d put them against not only $100-300, but against $1,000 and up binoculars and feel good about it. They’re worlds better than the $100-300 range and significantly better than the others, the way I see it.

The OpticsReviewer.com review for the EL with Swarovision (at http://www.opticsreviewer.com/swarovski-el-binoculars.html ) and the SLC HD (at http://www.opticsreviewer.com/swarovski-slc-hd.html ) are pretty spot on, in my opinion. (They’ll tell you the main difference between the two so I’ll not get into that here.)

I find the color to be stronger/more vibrant – but neutral as compared with silver-coated prisms which tend a bit toward yellows. The brightness is superb and will allow you to see significantly more in semi-dark lighting than you can without assistance. (Of course, they’re not night vision devices and aren’t intended to be.)

They resolve details much better than most binoculars – you’ll be able to see details more plainly with Swarovski glass than with most others. I believe that some of that is the HD glass and some of it is coatings.

Are they worth the money? If you have that kind of money to spend on binoculars, then yes, they’re worth every bit of it.

Many who have them will tell you to spend the money on them now and figure out how to fit them into the budget later – the idea is that you’ll not regret spending the resources on quality.

I wish you the best in choosing your next binocular, my friend -

swarovski e1 binoculars?
where is the cheapest place I can buy this binocular in the store or online.

Do you mean the Swarovski EL 8.5 x 42 binoculars? These are not cheap binos. There are several on line retailers selling them for about $1900 a pair in the U S. Since all 3 sites have exactly the same price, that is probably about the best you will find. I have bought 2 pair of binos at Eagle Optics. They give you 30 days money back if you do not like them. I did not buy Swarovski though. Too rich for my blood. I settled on Vortex Razor at less than 1/2 the price.

ANYONE KNOW ANY WEBSITE THAT SELLS BINOCULARS FOR A CHEAP FAIR PRICE?
Prefferably swarovski or zeiss

You know you can find them electronically, but the best place is at Household Auction company, Garage sales and better than that at an estate sale where the people have passed on and or moved to a nursing home. Make an offer, they can only say no. Do not be in a hurry I have seen many at these types of sales. Look in you local paper for the ads!!!

What binocular brand is the best?
What binocular brand do you think is the best. I am thinking about getting new binoculars and its between these brands. Zeiss, swarovski, and Leica. You could put what you like the most if its not listed.

Leupold, Meopta, Minox, plenty of others…
Not a dud in any of these….

I’m a Peeping Tom, but is this wrong of me?
My neighbour’s daughter, who is approx. 23 years old and very attractive with a beautiful body, she quite often leaves her curtains open and her room faces my house.

So at night when her lights are on it’s like watching a live tv show, and if I bring out the video camera (to zoom in) or my swarovski binoculars, it’s like watching the same show only in HD.

She quite often comes into the room fresh out of the shower, throws away the towel and lingers around the room naked, that’s when I turn into Tom and watch her put on lotion and whatever else she does.

I never tape her on the camera, nor take any pictures, but I do enjoy watching her. Is it wrong of me to watch her like this?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I’m pretty sure she has no idea that I’m watching her, and I don’t think she’s doing this for the attention. She just forgets to close the curtains and doesn’t realize that when it’s dark outside you can see really really well inside her fully illuminated room.

I’m 30 something…

What is insta focus on Bushnell falcon binoculars?
I am looking for binoculars to bird watch etc, and was interested in these, but i keep seeing stuff on insta focus but i don’t know what that is…..

Im not sure on how it works, but it does. With older optics, you would need to manually adjust the fine and course focus knobs for different distances. The Insta Focus is a feature of the lens’ that somehow forces your eyes to focus. The result is an almost imediate clear view at every distance without having to worry about adjusting any knobs.

Bushnell Binoculars, 11-1025 model that takes photos but how to download them to the PC?
I have the CD, I have also downloaded the driver from the Bushnell web site. I have Windows XP. This is really frustrating – I have set up these binoculars to link to my PC but all it allows me to do is do streaming video. Fun, but I have taken photos that for the life of me I can’t download. Bushnell was no help (they don’t answer). Anybody else here have these binoculars and have figured it out?

If you took the batteries out and you aren’t using an SD card then the photo’s or gone, it doesn’t work like that for other cameras. Check the support site (the link is lower in the answer).

I don’t know if this will help but have you tried going to my computer and checking if there is a extra drive there (removal drive or something else, with a name or model of the Binoculars).

Most Digital cameras are compatible with the mass storage driver built into XP and when you plug these devices in, it automatically creates a new drive which can also be used like a flash drive.

If there is no drive check the binoculars settings or mode. You might have to change it to a different mode. My camera works as web cam when I turn the dial to the video camera, and when I turn the dial to the picture of the stills camera it switch over to the mass storage driver and a new drive appears under my computer which i can go into and copy my photo’s off.

A last resort is to visit the Bushnell support page.

http://www.bushnell-binoculars.com/bushnell-10x25mm-imageview-binoculars-11-1025-111025.shtml

Download the manual

http://www.bushnell-binoculars.com/customer_service/manuals/binoculars/11-1025_imageview.pdf

If you have 1025C or CL go find the link to the correct manual here
http://www.bushnell-binoculars.com/pdf-html-manuals.shtml

What binoculars are there that have a mildot style ranging reticle? Is there anything besides ATN or Bushnell?
Does anyone have a picture of what the Bushnell Marine ranging reticle looks like? I’d buy these if I knew they could measure 1 MIL increments.

This question is for BINOCULARS only. Thanks.

they make 5 I believe. The equinox, stealthview, stealthview II, night watch and nightvision. They are not the top brand by any means for night vision but for what your intentions are they would be fine up to about 200 or so yards. They are the cheaper of the brands around 650 to start.

Question about night vision binoculars/monoculars?
Hello : ) A question about night vision:

I would really appreciate it if the people who answer this have actual experience or knowlege about night vision. (sorry, just bad experiences with some answers.)

My mom and I are looking to get my dad night vision binoculars or a monocular for Christmas, and we are stumped.

Price range would be probably $225-250 dollars tops. I know this isn’t going to buy the best or anything, but I’d like to get something good for the money.

There are soo many online. I was looking at a Bushnell night vision monocular for like 175, and a National Geographic one for about the same.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much!! : )

to be totally honest if that is ur price limit save the money and buy him something else……..to get a decent quality night vision setup minimum is 500 bucks….unless u catch someone selling a set used ….

and good to great sets run in the 2k-3k range…….

Binoculars issue for astronomy?
I did my research and bought some bushnell 10×50 binoculars for stargazing. Went out last night and was pretty dissapointed. was at a pretty dark school (even though there was some light around the school.) when trying to see jupiter it appeared as a fuzzy bright circle and could not see any of its moons. Which from what I have read online should be visible with 10×50 binoculars. So my question is: Is it the binoculars? or can it be that im not in a dark enough area? I was going to buy the Nikon 10×50 instead but those are 40$ more. Would those be better? thanks
no i do not wear glasses. yea i was dissapointed it looked like a star. and didnt see the moons around it. I tried playing around with the focus on the binoculars but that didnt help either. Im sure it was jupiter also. thanks for your input.

That’s strange that it should appear as a “fuzzy bright circle” b/c that usually describes a star. Planets resolve to a bright disk, normally. Do you wear glasses (not being sarcastic or funny) and if so were they on or off? Very possibly, it could be the optics are not that good or the collimation is off. Speaking from experience, I have the 10×50 Nikon. The views are crisp and clear. While I have heard some negative feedback on Bushnell, I can’t speak against the brand since I’ve never used them.

<EDIT> I think Geoff. Larry and Ed Sharp are our resident experts on binos; hopefully one of them will pick up your question.

Alternatively any gas masks that can be customised to cater for night vision?

None. It would be more like a gas “helmet” to accommodate all the lenses, batteries, and electrodes just to make it work.

What night vision goggles are currently in use by the army?
What exact model of night vision goggles currently in use by the united states military? How much does 1 set cost?

The main ones used are PVS-7 and PVS-14 series goggles with additional models being used for aircrews.

They will cost anywhere from $5,000 on up.

If you use Night vision goggles during the day will you go blind?
Or if you use like nightvision goggles and someone shines a torch at you or if you use night vision goggles in a buildings with lights on or somethng.
IF YOU DO GO BLIND is it irreversible?

The brightness of night vision equipment is adjusted by you for your comfort. If you get hit by bright lights while wearing them, the will “flare” or go solid white (green/amber/whatever the color of your system is).

It may get uncomfortable as your eyes are used to the dimmer light of the amplified darkness, but no more so than if you had just awakened in the morning on a sunny day and someone opened the blinds before you were ready.

It’s a shock, a bit of sensory overload, but this will not damage your eyes. It might screw up your normal night vision for 10-20 minutes as your eyes replenish the “active purple” in your eyes, but you aren’t going to go blind.

ADDITIONAL: I forgot to mention that newer systems have a cut out filter to prevent the screen image from getting too bright.

Can you see in a mirror in complete darkness with night vision goggles?
Ok, so I know that mirrors need light to work correct? I have never tried night vision goggles but I guess they dont put out any light. So, if you were in a room that is completely dark, put on night vision goggles, and staired into a mirror would you see anything?

Educated guesses are welcome!

Depends what you mean by “complete darkness”. Without some kind of light, no night-vision goggle could possibly work, as they make vision possible by amplifying what little visual signal there is. No light, no signal. Now, if you have a light source, even if it’s IR or UV outside normal human visual range, you could see something, depending on the capacity of the goggles to convert the signal into visual wavelengths.

How well do eye clops night vision goggles work?
I’m looking to buy those new night vision goggles from eye clops. For those who own them, how well do they work. Gimme some feedback.

They dont really work. Its all blurry and you can only see big objects, but u cnt tell wat de r

Im looking to buy a air of night vision goggles any recommendations for my circumstances?
Im 15 and moving to a house in the middle of the woods in the country. I thought it would be pretty cool to have some Night vision goggles to look around with at night. I am willing to spend up to about £100 and i want them to be pretty good quality and work well. Any ideas?
Are the modern warfare 2 prestige edition NVG’s any good?

For that little bit of money, all you’re going to find are first generation Russian surplus goggles; Read “funhouse grade optics, very little light gain, cheap,l and not worth it.”

A decent pair of III Generation PVS7-Cs are going to run you at leat 1500.

Does anybody know anything about black steiner binoculars?
A long time ago i bought a pair of 8×30 military binocs that were made in west Germany, so its obviously pre 1990 or so. But the weird thing is that they are black, not the olive drab that most military models are? A friend said that they might be the pilots model, but I cant find them anywhere online. Does any body know what they are and what their value is?

There are Steiner binocs that are black they are generally not marketed as military spec optics. However there are a few models from Steiner that are black and classed as “Navigational” so your friend may be on to something. As far as value goes there are Steiner Models comparable to yours pricing from $699-$999 but are green.
I would recommend contacting Steiner directly to see if your binocs are valuable or not.

What’s the difference between the steiner 12×40 & 12×50 binoculars other than the obvious looks?

the larger objective ( 50mm) will gather more light, so you see better in dim, so you can hunt longer. also, the 12×50 has a wider field of view.

What agency or department gives thecertification of product standards to military binoculars?
Example : for Steiner Military Binoculars

materials command

In general what is your opinion of?
Simmons scopes and Steiner binoculars
I have a Simmons scope and had a pair of Steiner’s ( I gave them to my brother )

I have used Simmons scopes. They are good for the money. I have shot MOA groups using them. The animals I have shot while using them were very dead.

My more expensive scopes have better clarity, light transmission, and resolution.

I have a 3×9 Simmons on a 30-06. After a few hundred rounds it is still ok.

I put a 4×32 Simmons on a 12 ga slug gun. Killed two deer with it.

Stiener makes excellent binocs. I have not yet been willing to cough up that much money. I have a $400 Burris Signature Series roof prism 8×42 that works very well.

And while I am waiting…a question about binoculars?
Just got in from one party….going to another. Waiting for Pavel. We are going as Rocky Horror. I am going as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, and Pavel is going as Rocky. He’s Blonde.

I normally never use binoculars. I wouldn’t know how. The way I hunt is like this: I have a very dear and close friend who works for the US Forest Service. He does creepy crawly all around the Angeles Forest looking for Meth Labs and Marijuana Farms. He stakes places out, and spends the night.(Angeles Forest is considered the most dangerous National Forest in America..

http://outsideonline.com/outside/magazine/0797/9707dark.html

He actually likes that kind of thing. Anyway, in the course of his travels, he spots deer. He has no interest in deer. I have virtually no chance whatsoever of finding them on my own. He knows my limitations, so he finds a place, usually down wind and above a spot where deer come down to drink in the morning (Angeles Forest is tall pine trees, but dry, dry , dry, it is so steep all water runs downhill). Usually within sixty yards of the deer. I am not such a great shot. Past 100 yards, the deer could stand up and thumb its nose at me, and be perfectly safe. I have gotten my deer six years running. But I notice he is getting a little cold towards me, and I will eventually have to find my own deer. So that brings up binoculars. Not that I know anything about using them, but I guess I need to learn. My father (now deceased) left me a big footlocker of all his hunting stuff. In there were all these OLD books on hunting. Apparently in the 1930′s and 1940′s, the 7 x 35mm Binoculars was all the rage. I have no idea what everyone uses now. I don’t see many 7 x 35mm in the Cabela’s catalog. It seems somehow that 8 power is now the big deal. Also the cost of binoculars now seems astronomical. I saw a pair made in Austria or Germany called “Steiner” that were several thousand dollars. Do you really need to spend that? What is a pair of binoculars that I could show up with at a guided hunt, and not look like a total cheapskate or a dork? Pavel claims that Russians make outstanding optics at very reasonable prices. But I can never believe anything he says. He tells me Russians invented Television and the Airplane. My favorite was when he explained to me that Russians invented the Gatling gun. But that the correct name is the Gorshun, because Admiral Gorshun actually invented it. I am not joking. He also claims the AK-47 was a completely original invention and was 100% Russian and had NOTHING to do with the German SturmGewehr 44 (StG44). Which was funny, because the safety on they AK-47 is an EXACT copy of the safety on the Remington Model 8/81. I have a Remington Model 81. I showed it to Pavel. He stared at it for a minute and then said “Ah, you see, Americans copy superior Kalashnikov design.” Never mind the Remington Model 8 was made in 1906 and the Kalashnikov was made 41 years later. So I am trying to figure out what binoculars to save up for. I am thinking of saving my nickels, my pennies, my dimes, maybe selling a gun I inherited I don’t like and buy a pair of binoculars worth about $500. Any ideas?
“First: Dont drink and Post” Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Was it THAT obvious? Ha. Pavel says I get drunk so easily , it embarrasses him. I only drink at like Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s and Halloween, so it doesn’t take much. Pavel won’t let me near a set on car keys on nights like this. Ha.
Oh, wow, my hands are numb.
A song for the kid:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhvzHianzLI

First: Dont drink and Post.

Second: a pair of $60 bushnell from walmart has always done fine for me. I wear glasses and like the focus free ones.

Glassing a deer in heavy timber & brush is almost impossible, and spotting one 1000 yards out is close to pointless.

i wanna buy steiner 25×80 or celestron or zhumell 25×100 binocular which one is better?have real magnificati?
on u think?

Check the website for Orion telescopes, they have one of the largest offerings of Binoculars for Astronomy.
As has already been pointed out, Binoculars like the one’s you mention need to be mounted. Two reasons: 1. They are heavy. 2. Most people have trouble keeping 10X binoculars steady enough to see anything, at 25X you’ll be shaking all over the sky. Don’t forget, when the optics magnify an object 25 times, they also magnify any errors, such as your hands shaking, 25 times.
But all is not lost. There are a number of binocular mount designs on the web for free. If you are handy with tools, you can make one yourself. Otherwise you have to purchase a commercial mount, which can cost as much as the binoculars.
Good Luck!

Binoculars zoom lenses?
Everybody is saying don’t get zoom binoculars, but what if you want to zoom your binocular in and out of an object that’s probably too close or far away? I’m planning to purchase the nikon traiblazer 10X50, but I’m afraid if there’s no zoom, it will serve no justice. This is my first time purchasing a binocular, and I’ve been doing alot of research but everything is sill a little unclear? I’m using it for star gazing, bird watching etc.. Is 10X50 good enough even-though there’s no zoom? Also, it has a 292 ft wide FOV.. Is this good enough? I read that the wider the view, the more distortion it will probably have.

A 10×50 is as good as you can get for normal binoculars.
You can get astro binoculars much bigger but they are no good without a proper mount and they are uncomfortable to use on normal tripods because they are much shorter than telescopes and the tripod head just gets in the way at high elevations, so you get a binocular mount which is expensive to buy, or you make one.
Here are some typical parallelogram ones for astronomy.
Sitting down time. Don’t faint.
http://www.bigbinoculars.com/pmounts.htm . . . .
10x50s are much more practical and will give you great views of the sky and they are excellent for birdwatching. They do quite well when it’s dusk, when a lot of birders are looking out for birds flying home or getting settled for the night.
Here’s the stuff about image brightness by day or night, magnification, etc. see the list of myths on the right. Coatings are very good these days so the argument against them in the link really is out of date, but all the other myths are explained very well.
http://www.birdwatching.com/optics/myths2006-9.html . . . . .
This is a very good site for explaining everything in a simple but accurate manner…everything you need to know
http://www.aoe.com.au/binocular_guide.html . . . . .
Finally, before spending loads on those Nikons, have a look at some Helios 10×50 for half the price and see if you can find any difference in the quality of the images.
We all see with our own eyes.
However good the sound from a loudspeaker is if you’re hearing is bad the speakers just won’t sound their best to you. Obvious.
It’s the same with binoculars. Leitz and Swarovski may give brilliant sharpness but can you see it?
At 10x you’ll have a job seeing anything like as good as the image is in the finest binoculars because the level of sharpness is greater than the eye can see.
The lenses are that good.
One benefit you get with nearly all the top ones is a flatter field right out to the edge, but we don’t see the whole field at once anyway. We can’t see 50-60 degrees wide as most binocular fields are and see it all sharp at the same time whether we’re looking straight out of our eyes or through a telescope or binoculars. The eye wanders round the field to see all there is, with or without using binoculars.
Look at the wallpaper or the view from the window and actually notice how much of it is sharp when you stare straight in front of you. We see it all sharp when we’re not conscious of our eyes’ workings because our eyes are wandering all over the place.. When we see something interesting towards the side of our vision we turn to look at it better, to get a sharp view.
It’s the same when you look through an eyepiece. Your eye wanders over the field, not seeing it all sharp at the same time though we get a general impression of sharpness or curvature in the whole field.
Tiny changes of focus are all you need to compensate for a curved field in most cases and it becomes automatic with one finger on the focusing wheel anyway, so save the money.
Mostly we just move the binos a bit to centalise the bit of something interesting we noticed towards the edge of the field, just as we turn our heads to see things more sharply in day to day looking at things.
You pay a lot of money for that extra sharpness and flat field……
Many cheaper binoculars are not far behind in practice, and some of them are just as good for practical use as the top drawer stuff costing hundreds of dollars or pounds, that you’ll leave behind more often than not for fear of spoiling them.
I have Helios 7×50 and 10×50, a Meade 15×70, a 20×80,and several other Binos.
Helios 10×50 are the ones I take out with me most times.
Helios binoculars also regularly get “Best Buy” in binocular reviews for astronomy and birdwatching.

Zoom binoculars are just no good for decent viewing.
The image you get won’t be anywhere near as good as in those Nikon binos or the Helios or even much cheaper ones.
Basically, zoom binoculars are crap, unless you want a show-off ornament to boast about.
Better to buy some proper binos and you’ll get much more use out of them.
You’ll soon get fed up with the zoom efforts and get sick of the field narrowing as you zoom in and images that let you actually see more at lower powers because the images at the high end of the zoom are so poor..
10x50s reign supreme for practical binoculars that cover a lot of uses, and good ones needn’t cost a fortune.
Have fun looking.

10x50s are much more practical and will give you great views of the sky and they are excellent for birdwatching. They do quite well when it’s dusk, when a lot of birders are looking out for birds flying home or getting settled for the night.

How far can i see into space with the following binoculars?
I want to get a nikon zoom action, it has about 22x magnification, can i see any planets? How big will they be, if its a dot i dont wanna get it but if its as big as picture i wannt it.

“How far?” is not the right question to ask, since you can see 2.5 million light years away with your naked eye alone. More important questions are about resolution and magnification. You haven’t even mentioned the diameter of the objectives on these binoculars, which is their most important specification. Binoculars are best for viewing large objects and vistas in the Milky Way, not for planets, which require a telescope. Zoom binoculars generally have very poor quality; you’ll do better with single magnification binoculars. The best binocular size for general astronomical use is the 10×50: 10 power with 50mm aperture.

To see any detail on the planets you need a telescope with a large enough aperture to resolve fine detail, and enough magnification. I’ve found 6 inches (150mm) to be the minimum aperture for satisfactory views of the planets, and normally use magnifications between 150x and 250x. Don’t buy a telescope which is advertised by its magnification! Many telescope ads claim outrageously high magnifications, but lack the aperture to deliver sharp images at those magnifications. Remember: aperture first, and then magnification.

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don’t buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:

http://www.skyandtelescope.com/community/organizations

I strongly recommend that beginners steer clear of astrophotography until they have learned their way around the sky. Astrophotography is by far the most expensive and difficult area of amateur astronomy.

Many people who buy telescopes have no idea how to find interesting things to observe. A good introduction to finding things is NightWatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly). A more advanced book is Star Watch by Phil Harrington (Wiley).

what are the best type of binoculars for watching crew (rowing)?
This is for watching college and high school crew from the shore. I’m thinking of something like the Nikon Action 10-22×50 Zoom XL Binoculars.

It depends on how far away from they action you will be.
That’s a lot of zoom, and especially at the 22X range, you’ll find it hard to hold the binoculars still enough to get a good view, unless you get a tripod for it.
You might be happier with something more in the 7X40 or 7X50 range.

Celestron UpClose 10-30×50 Zoom
Sale Price: $49.95

I have a pair of Celestron upclose variable binoculars that have proven to have a very clear and sharp image. The only downside to these is the relatively narrow field of view; but, if I had to pick between these three I would go with the Celestron.

In a perfect world I would suggest 50mm as a minimum and 80mm as optimum; and, I would want to check the collimation first hand since it can vary from pair to pair, and most of them cannot be fixed.
